A Defense Department official is under investigation for allegedly hiring private contractors to gather intelligence on suspected insurgents in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a U.S. official said Monday.The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case, told The Associated Press that Michael D. Furlong directed a defense contract to gather information about the region that could be shared with military units. HAVANA AP - Nearly two dozen singers and musicians from nine Latin American nations honored Fidel Castro with a concert Friday on the eve of the former Cuban leader s 85th birthday.Dubbed the Serenade to Fidelity, the spectacle was a homage to the life of a man, of a people, of a nation and of a revolution, the Communist Party newspaper Granma said.
