One of the more frequent annoyances of our modern world is the endless defenses social media platforms make to sidestep their responsi yeezy slide bilities to curb the myriad problems that arise solely because they exist. Every so often, one of them will pat themselves on the back for doing the Absolute Bare Minimum to amend an ongoing problem. This week, Twitter鈥攁rguably among the top-ranking hell sites on the internet鈥攁nnounced it was updating its rules to better combat hateful content. A new review out Wednesday paints a sorry picture about the state of antibody tests meant to find out whether youve ever had covid-19. It suggests that these tests range wildly in accuracy from manufacturer to manufacturer, with tests that quickly return results at the doctors office faring so badly that they probably shouldnt be used at all for now. Antibody, or serological, tests are designed to look for the specific antibodies that our bodies make in response to infection from the coronavirus that causes covid-19. One possible answer to the growing plastic problem could come from a weird place: salmon jizz. In a study published recently in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, a team of researchers from China detail how theyve created what they call DNA plastics, a plastic material made from strands of DNA. To create the new material, researchers extracted DNA from salmon sperm and mixed it with chemicals from vegetable oil to create a gel-like substance. That substance can then be formed into a mold and freeze-dried. Researchers in the study used this process, which they call aqua-welding, to produce a bunch o adidas campus f little tchotchkes, including a mug, a model of a DNA molecule, and some puzzle pieces. The mug, frankly, looks like something made from sperm and isnt going to win any design awar nike sb dunk ds anytime soon. Recycling this particular plastic is easy: A special enzyme can digest the DNA to break it down, or it can be dunked in water to turn it back into a gel. That, incidentally, also means the mug might not be the best use of thi adidas samba og s particular plastic technology. In addition to being easily broken down, an added bonus of this new material is that its carbon footprint is much lower than traditional plastic since it doesnt require any heat. The salmon spunk plastic uses about 5% of the energy that it takes to make regular plastic. Plastics made from biological materials like cornstarch have much lower emissions over their lifetime than regular plastics made with petrochemical Cpjk This Tiny Satellite Used an Off-the-Shelf GoPro to Take an Epic Selfie in Space
Graphene has a frankly overwhelming array of amazing possible uses, from body armor to seeing through walls. To that list, you can perhaps add the ability to fight cancer, too. Researchers at the University of Manchester in the UK鈥攖he birthplace of graphene鈥攈ave used the 2D carbon material to target and neutralise cancer stem cells. Using a modified fo salomon sommerschuhe rm of graphene called graphene oxide, Professor Michael Lisanti and Dr Aravind Vijayaraghavan have observed that it can act as an anti-cancer agent, inhibiting the formation of the basic tumour sphere that grows during the onset of cancer. Instead, the stem cells went on to form non-cancerous cells. Testing graphene oxide formulations with breast, pancreatic, lung, brain, ovarian and prostate cancer cells, flakes of the material appear to blocks the surface processes through which cancer stem cells join together. The results are published in Oncotarget. The researchers suggest that the compound could be used alongside other treatments to help encourage tumour shrinkage as w mizuno handballschuh ell as preventing the spread of cancer and its recurrence after treatment. A particularly attractive aspect of that proposition is that the compound is non-toxic, unlike many other cancer therapeutics, suggesting it could be used with few side effects. A California woman who claims she saw Sasquatch perched in a tree last year is suing California for refusing to accept what she now knows to be true: Bigfoot inhabits the San Bernardino mountains. Claudia Ackley鈥攚ho has been researching Bigfoot for the last two decades鈥攚as hiking with her two daughters, aged 11 and 14, near Lake Arrowhead last March when her children became paralyzed with fear, Ackley told local news outlets. At first Ackley assumed they had seen a bear, but she then observed what appeared to be an approximately 800-pound creature resembling a hairy Neanderthal just a few yards away, about 30 feet up in a tree. Once she and her daughters were safe, Ackley called authorities to report the Sasquatch sighting, but they insisted she had seen a bear. That denial inspired Ackley to file a lawsuit against the California Department o ugg mini f Fish and Wildlife and the state Natural Resources Agency last month, accusing California of dereliction of duty for failing to protect Bigfoot and infringing on her constitutional rights.
