Still, the extraordinarily rare always makes a good story, and so we hear when someone wins the lottery, and we hear when someone is struck by lightning. Some people are even killed by the strikes, although the odds are sometimes calculated to be in excess of two million to one. What we never hear about is anyone being killed by a meteor. Reportedly, a UK teenager was hit on the hand by one in 2009, and an Alabama woman was hit on the hip in the fifties. A dog in Egypt was supposedly vaporized. There have been quite a few reports of near misses. But no human has ever been killed by one. And yet, the odds that you, yes you, will be killed by a meteor are much higher than the odds of a lightning strike. These worrisome odds stack up not because of frequent homicidal meteors, but because of the effectiveness of meteors over a certain size. How better to end the day than with some ichthyological flatulence Thanks to an undersea robot, we ;ve recorded some fish off the coast of Florida producing some previously unknown sounds. And the best explanation really is that the fish are farting. Specifically, fish such as menhaden and herring likely created the noise by releasing gas from an internal organ known as the swim bladder. That gas passing doesn ;t sound too much like human farting 鈥?you can hear it in the video up top, although I ;m afraid it only barely audible 鈥?but it does represent the closest fish equivalent to flatulence, an activity that is primarily observed in mammals. What particularly interesting about this is where the fish chose to fart. The glider robot was able to record the location of all the sounds made by the various fish in the sea surrounding Tampa Bay, and most of the noises made by these fish only happened at depths greater than forty meters. The one exception Yep, the fish headed to shallower waters when it was time to fart. If I didn ;t know better, I ;d say they w stanley thermosflasche ere trying to get as close to us as possible before they started passing gas. Also, the fish seemed to wait until nighttime before farting, which I can only assume was because, like all species with self esteem issues, the fish were too ashamed of their flatulenc stanley canada e to fart during the daytime. You know the much-ballyhooed theory that high national debt always correlates to crappy economic growth The one that trotted out on a regular basis by politicians arguing for austerity budgets and sequestration Well, according to new findings, the study that austerity proponents cite more than any other is based on an Excel error. A big one. The glitchy data comes from a hallmark study on debt, Growth in a Time of Debt, from 2010. Since it was published, it become a favorite of people like Paul Ryan, who mentioned it frequently during the Romney campaign. But a new meta-ana stanley cup lysis of the study original Excel spreadsheet, by three UMASS economists, uncovered several errors, including the selective omission of data, an undiscussed weighting system, and an error in the Excel spreadsheet that excluded five countries. As the Rortybomb blog explains and to clarify an earlier version of this post , correcting for the omission, weighting, and Excel mistake shows that countries with a debt-to-GDP ratio over 90 percent have an average growth rate of 2.2 percent, not -.1 percent as the original paper concluded. This suggests that while debt and growth are related, the correlation is weaker than previously assumed. stanley thermos mug We will redouble our efforts to avoid such errors in the future, responded the scientists in a Wall Street Journal post today. If you ;re never content with Wi-Fi speeds, rest assured that scientists are trying to help. In fact, a team of Japanese researchers has just broken the record for wireless data transmission in the terahertz range鈥攚ith a data rate 20 times higher than most current Wi-Fi connections. The results are published in Electronics Letters. To do that, they used a 1 millimeter-square device known as a resonant tunneling diode, which produces smaller voltages with increasing current. By tuning the current, the team are able to make the tiny device resonate, and spit out signals in the terahertz band. It is, of course, currently just a proof of concept, and terahertz Wi-Fi would probably only ever work over distances of the order of tens of yards. But greater eyes, that were hooked up to greater minds, have also been fooled by the infamous Moon Illusion.
