When to start using a maternity pillow?

Post by Carolyn Miller »

A maternity pillow is a specially designed pillow that provides support and comfort to pregnant women, particularly during sleep. As pregnancy progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult for women to find a comfortable sleeping position due to the growing belly and the physical changes their bodies undergo. Maternity pillows are shaped and cushioned to relieve pressure from areas like the back, hips, knees, and abdomen, promoting better sleep and reducing discomfort.

You can start using a maternity pillow whenever you begin to feel discomfort during sleep, which often happens during the second trimester (around 20 weeks) as your baby bump grows. However, there is no strict rule, and some women may benefit from using a maternity pillow earlier in pregnancy, especially if they experience back pain, hip pain, or difficulty finding a comfortable sleeping position.

Here are some common signs that it might be time to start using a maternity pillow:

Back pain: As the pregnancy progresses, the weight of your growing belly can strain your back, and a pillow can provide extra support.
Discomfort while sleeping: If you're struggling to get comfortable, especially while side sleeping (recommended during pregnancy), a maternity pillow can help support your belly and align your spine.
Hip or pelvic pain: The increasing pressure on your pelvis can cause discomfort, and a pillow placed between your knees can relieve some of the strain.
Trouble with side sleeping: As your belly grows, sleeping on your side can become awkward. A pillow can help keep you stable and prevent you from rolling onto your back.

Every pregnancy is different, so listen to your body and start using a maternity pillow whenever you feel the need for extra support.
